A strong immune system is your dog's first line of defense against infections, chronic diseases, and common health issues.
One of the essential elements to keep your dog healthy is therefore to ensure that it maintains a good immune system.
In this article, I’ll share five key strategies to strengthen your dog's immune system and ensure a long and fulfilling life.
Strategy 1: A suitable diet
The first strategy for keeping your dog in top condition starts with their diet. Dogs have a digestive system optimized to digest and absorb the nutrients found in meat, offal, and bones. Dogs are essentially facultative carnivores, meaning they need plenty of easily digestible animal protein. That's why I highly recommend a raw, fresh, and well-balanced diet for dogs. This type of food is rich in protein, enzymes, vitamins, and minerals, and it's easily absorbed by dogs. Protein plays a crucial role in building antibodies, which are essential for fighting infections. Adding even just 20% raw food to your dog's diet can significantly boost their immune system.
Strategy 2: Omega-3s
Omega-3s are essential fatty acids with anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. Reducing inflammation is key to protecting your dog against chronic diseases. Omega-3s are abundant in marine sources, such as fish and fish oil. Another excellent source (and my personal favourite) is Omega 3 - Seal oil. I recommend adding omega-3s to your dog's diet daily, whether they're fed a raw food diet or kibble.
Strategy 3: Probiotics
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that maintain a healthy and balanced intestinal flora. Did you know that nearly 70% of your dog's immune system resides in its gut? Probiotics strengthen the intestinal barrier, preventing bad bacteria from causing infections. To get the most benefit from probiotics, it’s recommended to administer them for 30 days, twice a year, in the spring and fall. Click here to see the ones I'm suggesting.
Strategy 4: Reduce your stress
Chronic stress can weaken your dog's immune system. That's why it's essential to create a calm and safe environment for them. Dogs love routine; it reassures them. Walks are excellent ways to reduce stress. If your dog is prone to stress, it's important to identify the underlying causes and consult specialists if necessary.
Strategy 5: Physical exercise
Regular exercise is essential for boosting your dog's immune system. Daily walks, play sessions, and even chewing exercises are excellent ways to increase their physical activity.
In summary, by following these strategies, you will help your dog maintain a good immune system, and you will therefore contribute to keeping your dog with you for a long time, and in good health.
