Comment avoir du plaisir avec ton chien en voyage!

How to have fun with your dog while travelling!

You adore your dog and would love to be able to go on vacation with them without any worries. It might seem complicated, but don't worry! I'm sharing the tips I've developed over the years for travelling well with my dogs. Today, I'm going to share my best advice for avoiding stress and digestive issues for your dog during your adventures. By following these simple steps, you can enjoy a pleasant trip with your furry friend.

Tip 1: Bring water from home

You might not think about it often, but water tastes different in different places, which can confuse your dog. Dogs are often less inclined to drink when travelling and stressed. To ensure they stay hydrated, it's best to bring water from home and offer it to them regularly in a quiet place. By offering familiar water, you increase the chances that your dog will drink enough. If you're planning a longer trip and can't bring enough water, consider using bottled water to avoid digestive issues related to varying water quality.

Tip 2: Bring your dog's usual food

Dietary changes can upset a dog's digestive system and cause issues like vomiting or diarrhea. Therefore, it's important to bring your dog's usual food in airtight containers. Remember to pack a few days' worth of extra food in case you decide to extend your trip. This way, you won't have to search for your dog's specific food in unfamiliar places.

Tip 3: Make sure your dog is microchipped

It's essential that your dog wears an ID tag or collar with your phone number during the trip. Dogs can get lost or behave unexpectedly when in a new environment or stressed. Identification will make it easier for them to find you if needed. You can also consider using GPS tracking devices like AirTags, which allow you to locate your dog using your mobile phone.

Tip 4: Bring insect repellent

When you go on vacation, you'll likely be doing outdoor activities in unfamiliar places. In some areas, especially on the East Coast of the United States or in wooded areas, there may be a higher presence of ticks. Nothing is more unpleasant than finding a tick on your dog during your vacation. So be sure to pack a natural insect repellent and tick tweezers to effectively remove them. Prevention is key to avoiding issues related to ticks and the diseases they can transmit.

Tip 5: Give your dog a probiotic

Dogs can be more prone to digestive issues when stressed, which can happen during vacations. To prevent diarrhea and ensure your dog's intestinal well-being, it can be beneficial to give them a probiotic before, during, and after the trip. Even if your dog isn't sensitive, bring some with you, as changes in water or unfamiliar food can sometimes cause loose stools.

Tip 6: Always keep a collar and leash handy

It's important to be able to control your dog in all circumstances. Make sure they wears a collar with an ID tag and keep a leash handy, whether in the car or at a hotel. This will allow you to take your dog out quickly and safely, whether for their needs or for a short walk. A long line can also be useful for giving your dog more freedom when they’re safe.

Tip 7: Secure your dog in the car

It's essential to secure your dog when travelling by car. Ideally, use a safety harness or a suitable carrier to prevent any risks in case of an accident or sudden braking. Your dog's safety is paramount, even when travelling.

Tip 8: Get your dog used to it from a young age

The last and probably most important tip: get your dog used to travelling from a young age. The earlier dogs are accustomed to seeing new things and meeting new people, the more enjoyable they'll be to take with you on trips. They'll be less stressed because they'll be used to it, and that guarantees more fun for both them and you.

With these practical tips, you're now ready to travel with your dog with complete peace of mind. Don't forget to bring fresh water from home, your dog's usual food, ensure they are microchipped, pack insect repellent, offer a probiotic if needed, and always keep a collar and leash handy. By following these simple steps, you can enjoy a pleasant and harmonious trip with your loyal companion. Have a great trip!
