A situation that many dog owners find disheartening and sad is when their dog starts showing signs of difficulty walking, and therefore a decline in their quality of life. The reality is that old age inevitably affects our dogs' joints. Just like us, their joints suffer the ravages of time. The first signs may appear as lameness and reduced mobility. These symptoms should not be left untreated, as joint deterioration can lead to more serious issues and a decrease in your dog's quality of life. It can even lead to the decision to have them euthanized when the situation becomes too severe.
Many dogs are currently struggling with joint issues such as hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, cruciate ligament tears, and premature joint wear. In fact, a recent study showed that over 20% of dogs over one year old already exhibited signs of joint deterioration! That's crazy!
To help prevent this problem and keep your dog healthy and active, supplements can play a crucial role. In this article, I'll share my 3 favorite supplements to help prevent joint deterioration in your dog and give them as long a pain-free life as possible.
Here they are:
1. Green Lipped Mussel
Green Lipped Mussel is a completely natural option to help keep your dog's joints healthy. It's basically a powdered mollusk; it doesn't get more natural than that! Green Lipped Mussel contains glucosamine and fatty acids, which help strengthen joints and reduce inflammation. Studies have shown its effectiveness in preventing and treating joint issues. That's why I highly recommend it (see: How Green Lipped Mussel can help relieve joint pain in dogs).
2. Omega-3s
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for maintaining inflammatory balance in your dog's body. An omega-3 deficiency can lead to chronic inflammation and accelerate joint deterioration. By adding a source of omega-3, such as marine oil, to your dog's daily diet, you help support their joints and improve their quality of life. I recommend Omega 3 - Seal oil, which is particularly effective at aiding your dog's absorption of omega-3s thanks to its DPA content. After just a few days of use, people often notice a difference in their dog's coat, which becomes shinier and healthier.
3. Curcumin
Curcumin is more than just a spice used in cooking. It has exceptional anti-inflammatory properties that can greatly benefit your dog's joint health by reducing inflammation and soothing joint pain. Curcumin works naturally without harming internal organs, offering a safe and effective alternative to anti-inflammatory medications. I recommend adding Curcuplex to your dog's diet; it's turmeric encapsulated in a microscopic matrix of fats, allowing it to have all the positive effects on your dog.
Personally, I give these 3 supplements to my dogs as a preventative measure, starting at 8 weeks of age. I simply add them once a day to their food.
Adding these supplements to your dog's diet is beneficial, but it should be done gradually and carefully. Start with one supplement at a time and monitor your dog's reactions. If you see improvements, continue adding supplements little by little, making sure to maintain a balance and avoid any intolerances.
Prevention is key to maintaining your dog's joints in good health during their golden years. By introducing these 3 supplements into their daily diet, you'll help slow joint degeneration and improve their quality of life. Remember that every dog is unique, so carefully monitor their reactions and adjust the dosages accordingly. By taking care of your dog's joints, you're giving them the opportunity to live a long, active, and happy life.
