L'importance de varier la nourriture de ton chien (en 6 raisons)

The importance of varying your dog's food (6 reasons)

Have you ever heard that you should always give your dog the same food to avoid health issues?

It’s high time to demystify this idea.

It’s recognized by most nutrition professionals that variety is the key to nutritional balance.

However, no matter how many foods are contained in a dog food, or whether the packaging says "complete food," it’s very unlikely that a single food will be sufficient to meet all of an animal's nutritional needs.

In this article, I'm going to reveal why it's essential to diversify your dog's diet.

Reason 1: To avoid nutritional deficiencies

Each food is unique in terms of nutritional composition. The idea of giving your dog the same food to meet all its needs is a misconception.

Even if a food is labeled as "complete" on paper, it doesn't mean it contains everything your dog needs.

For example, in the case of raw food, a fish-based diet may be higher in protein and selenium, but lower in calcium, than, for example, a chicken-based diet.

Varying between the 2, and ideally with several others, could prevent reinforcing a deficiency in certain foods in the long run.

Reason 2: To avoid the risk of poisoning

No food brand is immune to contamination issues.

By offering your dog a variety of foods, you reduce the risks associated with potential bacteria or excess vitamins, which can lead to food poisoning, among other things.

By diversifying your dog's diet, you reduce the chances of them developing issues related to a particular type of food.

Reason 3: Preventing food intolerances

Consistently offering the same food can lead to food intolerances.

If you always feed your dog a chicken-based diet, for example, your dog may eventually develop an intolerance to this protein.

Introducing a varied diet is a preventative strategy to spare your dog digestive issues related to a monotonous diet.

Reason 4: To strengthen the immune system

Did you know? Gut health is closely linked to the immune system. It’s thought to be responsible for more than 70% of a dog's immunity.

By diversifying the food you give your dog; you enrich its gut flora with beneficial microorganisms. This diversity strengthens its immune system and makes it better equipped to face external threats.

Reason 5: Stimulate your dog's appetite

Imagine eating the same thing every day… Boring, isn't it? Dogs also appreciate variety in their diet.

By varying the tastes, smells, and textures, you tantalize your dog's taste buds, making meals more appealing. Variety is key to keeping them excited at mealtimes.

Reason 6: To prevent your dog from becoming difficult

Getting your dog used to different types of food from a young age can prevent picky eating issues in the future.

Dogs that have been exposed to a variety of flavors and textures are more likely to accept new foods.

In short, a varied diet is key to your dog's optimal health and long-term well-being. By preventing deficiencies, the risk of poisoning, and intolerances, and by strengthening their immune system, you're investing in a healthy life for your dog.

Varies, among other things, between brands, proteins, and types of food used.
