Do you have a puppy at home? Are you wondering about the best food to give them? Kibble, or raw?
It's often said that you shouldn't give raw food to a puppy before the age of one, as it could be dangerous for their health. However, I personally have been feeding my puppies a raw diet from the age of 4 weeks for over 25 years. My dogs are in excellent health, and in my experience, I've observed that puppies fed kibble often have digestive issues and allergies.
Raw feeding offers many health benefits for puppies, and in this article (and in the video), I will explain 3 reasons why it’s advantageous to start this feeding approach early.
Reason 1: Reduce the risk of allergies through a raw food diet
One of the main reasons to feed a puppy a raw diet is that it can help reduce the risk of allergies later in life. Studies have shown that puppies fed a raw diet before the age of one are less likely to develop allergies as adults. This is excellent news for your dog's health, as allergies can cause numerous health issues and discomfort for the animal.
By offering your puppy a raw diet from a young age, you will give it a better chance of developing a strong immunity to potential allergens, which can prevent unnecessary suffering in the future.
Reason 2: A rich source of protein for puppy growth
Raw food stands out for its high content of quality protein. While the best kibble typically provides around 35% protein, or even less, raw food can reach up to 60% protein. This is a significant difference that can have a major impact on a puppy's growth and development.
Protein is essential for muscle formation, organ and brain development, and maintaining a healthy immune system. For a growing puppy, a diet rich in high-quality protein is therefore crucial for their health and well-being.
Reason 3: A strengthened gut microbiota thanks to a raw food diet
The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in a puppy's overall health, particularly regarding its immune system. Research has shown that dogs fed a raw diet have a stronger and more diverse gut microbiota. This bacterial diversity contributes to better gut health and a more resilient immune system.
A puppy's first year of life is crucial for the development of its gut microbiota. By feeding your puppy a raw diet from a young age, you promote the development of a balanced microbiota, which can have positive effects on their health throughout its life.
Key points for a successful raw food diet
If you’re considering switching your puppy to a raw food diet, it’s important to take into account certain key elements to ensure its success and the health of your pet.
First, it's essential to be well-informed and educated about raw food. Consult reliable sources, take courses, and read books by experts to understand the fundamental principles of this dietary approach. You can click here to see the articles I offer on this topic.
Secondly, carefully plan the change in diet. Choose the appropriate foods, equip yourself with the necessary tools (for example, a freezer to store raw food) and establish a gradual food transition plan for your puppy.
Third, vary the protein sources in your puppy's diet (learn here why this is important). A variety of raw foods promotes better gut health and contributes to the animal's overall well-being.
Observe your puppy to ensure optimal nutrition
Closely observing your puppy is essential to ensure that a raw diet is perfectly suited to them. Monitor their weight to prevent them from becoming too thin or too fat, as a balanced weight is crucial for their overall health. You can also click here to read my article on the subject.
By choosing a raw food diet from a young age, you offer your puppy numerous benefits for its future health. Reduced risk of allergies, a high intake of quality protein, and a strengthened gut microbiota are all advantages that will contribute to a long and healthy life for your dog.
